Smith rips top to Arrowhead victory
Colcord, OK (July 18, 2025) — Anthony, NM driver Mark Smith has had something of a breakout season so far in 2025. He picked up his first career USMTS victory earlier this year, added a late model win last weekend at Vado Speedway to his résumé, and then made his presence felt last night during night one of Joe Duvall’s Funkadelic Dirt Track & Honky Tonk Extravaganza weekend. In a night billed as “Heartland vs. ARMS” for the dual regional event, Smith stole the spotlight, the winner’s check, and $2,600 worth of lap leader bonus money to boot.
After the Outlaw Kids Racing Tour A-Main redraw was complete, the starting lineup saw HMT series regular Tad Davis on the pole. Davis quickly built a half-straightaway advantage while fifth-starting Smith, Sean Gaddis, Jason Hughes, and Duvall all argued over the runner-up spot. Smith untangled himself from that mess a lap later, and two laps after that, he was all over the 75, stealing the lead on lap five.
While Smith worked the top of the speedway, navigating a treacherous cushion that continually upset his race car, Davis was content to wrap the bottom of the racetrack, keeping the 2ss within striking distance just past the halfway point. When the lead duo entered traffic, things got interesting. Davis took multiple shots at the leader but couldn’t overcome the momentum Smith carried off the top of the track at both ends of the speedway.
A lap-21 caution bunched the field back up, and it was a scrum behind the leader on the restart. Davis found himself under attack again from Gaddis and Hughes, while Kale Westover and a hard-charging Tyler Wolff had also joined the fray. Gaddis, Wolff, Hughes, and Westover shuffled Davis out of the top five before the final caution waved with two laps to go. On the final restart, the top five remained unchanged, with Smith taking the win while Tyler Davis dropped Tad Davis another spot, those two finishing sixth and seventh, respectively.
Smith grabbed a $2,000 winner’s check, bringing his total winnings on the night to $4,600, plus a custom workbench from Wheeler Metals. Other contingency award giveaways for night one of the Funkadelic were provided by MB Customs, Schoenfeld Headers, Fast Shafts, Dizzy Dean Electric, and Bryke Racing.
