Salina Speedway Goes to Mullens

For the third straight event, Tanner Mullens topped the USRA Heartland Modified Tour Presented by Real Racing Wheels feature. This time it was at Salina Speedway in Salina, Kansas. It was only his second time in a brand new car he built.

“I didn't know where anybody was,” said Mullens of the yellow which flew with three to go. “I was just hoping it gave me some clean track there to get going again. I got to thank that little boy up there for drawing me a one (in the Outlaw Kids Racing Tours redraw). I think that played a big part in it. I enjoy coming to these races, it's a lot of fun.”

Prior to the late yellow there was a long green flag run with drivers all over the track. Lapped traffic was thick late for the second through fourth positions. Dustin Hodges, Tad Davis and Bobby Williams were back and forth several times as the cars directly ahead of them raced two and three wide.

Hodges held on to secure runner up honors, with Tad Davis finishing third. Both runs were the best of the season for each driver. Bobby Williams and Randal Schiffelbein Jr. completed the balance of the top five.

Early on heat race wins went to Dustin Hodges, Troy Gemmill and Bobby Williams. The Deatherage Opticians Fast Time went to Hodges as well, with a quick lap of 19.236 seconds.

Saturday the series heads to the Sartain family's 81 Speedway in Park City, Kansas, just outside of Wichita. Over the years it has been the site of many “too close to call” finishes and barn burner races, featuring a winners list of the best drivers from across the entire country.
