Races seven and eight for the USRA Heartland Modified Tour Presented by Real Racing Wheels take place this weekend in Kansas. Friday will see the series stars take to the Salina Speedway. Saturday action moves just a little bit south to the famed 81 Speedway in Park City, Kansas.
Last year, Brendon Gemmill scored the Salina victory and 81 Speedway wins went to Rodney Sanders and Tyler Wolff. Tour officials are glad to be taking the series back to both places again this season.
Tad Davis is in second year with the series full time and has moved into third in the points. He is 40 out from the lead, on the heels of some strong early performances. Davis has a pair of fifth place finishes and only two out of the top ten. Consistency has him contending for the top spot as he's headed back to the majority of tracks where he has raced before.
“I haven’t raced at Salina a lot in my career,” said Davis. “I have always had pretty bad luck there but I enjoy getting to go there. It’s different than most places we go, and it can be pretty tricky at times. We had good speed there last year, so I’m looking forward to it! I’m excited to get back to 81, looking forward to elbows up fast paced racing all night!”
Davis drives a Mullens Chassis. His car builder, Tanner Mullens has been the driver to beat lately, having won the last two shows.
“I really enjoy Tanner's cars,” Davis further shared. “He is a big help and very knowledgeable. My car has good speed and is very responsive everywhere we go. It’s nice having a bunch of friends, on the tour, in his cars, to help and bounce ideas off each other. It's just a lot more fun.”
Above everything else this weekend, he's happy to be racing close to home around family and friends.
“We enjoy getting to travel but it’s nice for family and friends to come out and watch,” concluded Davis. “There are people we haven’t got to see all season yet! It really should be a great weekend.”
Action among the tour regulars has been fierce all season. Randal Schiffelbein Jr was on fire to start the year. Shadren Turner has shown remarkable speed, especially for a rookie, but has fought mechanical issues lately. Brandon Givens has proven the most consistent, leading the standings. Tyler Davis will also be a big time contender this weekend, having won the two USRA shows held at 81 Speedway this season. He also has a pair of runner up tour finishes.
Please make plans to visit one or both facilities this weekend. Salina Speedway in Salina, Kansas rolls on Friday night, and 81 Speedway in Park City, Kansas fires up Saturday.
