Paden Phillips Scores Career Win at Humboldt Speedway
With 33 cars in the pits for Kids night at Humboldt Speedway Presented by Hodges Farms & Dredging, The Heartland Modified Tour Presented by Real Racing Wheels took center stage, and delivered stellar performance form top to bottom. When the VP Checkers flew Paden Phillips stood at the top of the heap and celebrated with his family and friends in Victory Lane.
“I just can't believe we did it, the biggest win of my career,” exclaimed Phillips as climbed out of the car. “I knew I lost my momentum there at that lap where he (Tyler Wolff) moved up in front of me. I tried to slide him and I missed it just a little bit. I didn't know who was down there (in turns three and four) but I knew they would be breathing down my throat. Then I see Tyler, and I knew I couldn't let my foot out of it and it ended up working out.”
The late race scenario explained by Phillips all led up the race's second and final Midwest Sheet Metal caution. Coming to the first Hochatown Saloon Last Call, Wolff slid Phillips exiting turn four, the two briefly made contact and Tanner Mullens closed in on the lead duo. However, at the same time, Jarret Dotson lost power at the flag stand necessitating a pause in the action.
The final race rundown shows Phillips leading every lap form start to finish. However, he rarely had time to pace himself. Continually weaving in and out of lapped traffic and running different lines kept the race interesting throughout. Action was also intense behind him the entire race too. Phillips went onto further thank the staff for putting on an excellent race.
“This track is awesome! There is no one that can work a track like Ryan Whitworth. There is no track as racey as Humboldt Speedway, when they got it right ”
Tanner Mullens ran up front for the entire feature and wound up third. Gary Christian spent a large portion of the race battling with Gunner Martin inside of the top five. The two swapped spots and ended with Christian narrowly taking the position.
With another strong performance, Tyler Wolff stretched his lead in the championship standings to 49 over Chad Wheeler. Brandon Givens jumped up one spot to third, sliding Nic Bidinger to fourth. Gunner Martin is holding down the fifth spot.
Next Up for the HMT Presented by Real Racing Wheels is a stop Saturday at Caney Valley Speedway in Caney, Kansas. Fans unable to attend will be able to watch at RacinDirt.tv.
